The Odyssey Doubles on Saturday as IMAX Screens Stay Sold Out

Nolan's Homer epic is tracking past 36 crore in two days, the strongest Hollywood start in India this year.

The Odyssey has taken 47 crore net in its first two days in India, with a 26.3 crore Saturday against an opening of 20.8 crore. The film is running across 17,204 shows, the widest Hollywood release of the year in this market, and 70mm IMAX shows in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru have remained sold out since Wednesday.

English-language releases account for roughly 11 percent of the Indian box office this month. What makes the Odyssey number notable is where it is coming from: premium formats. IMAX and other large-format screens are contributing a share of revenue far above their share of seats, the pattern Nolan's films have followed in India since Interstellar.

For exhibitors the timing is useful. The Odyssey occupies the premium end of the market while Dhamaal 4 holds the mass end, and the two are not fighting for the same seats. Both films posted growth on Saturday, which is rare in a two-film corridor.

The film has open air until Spider-Man: Brand New Day lists on 30 July.
