Jana Nayagan has crossed 260.25 crore worldwide in eight days, on 153.48 crore net in India and an India gross of 179.33 crore, with overseas contributing 81 crore. For a Tamil release that is a genuinely large number, and it confirms the scale of the send-off Vijay's final acting role was always going to get.
The opening week ranks sixth in Tamil cinema history at 123.15 crore over the first six days, ahead of Vikram's 118.40 crore and Bigil's 110.10 crore, and behind only Leo, Jailer, The Greatest of All Time, Coolie and Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1. That is the headline the film will keep.
The trajectory underneath it is less comfortable. After 42.70 crore on Friday and a 32 crore Sunday, Monday fell to 10.65 crore, and the decline has continued each day since: 8 crore, then 6.10 crore, then 3.98 crore on day eight, a drop of nearly 35 percent and the weakest day of the run. Spider-Man's release cut its show count to 5,496. The second weekend will decide whether the film has a long tail or simply a very large opening.
