Spider-Man: Brand New Day Posts the Biggest Opening Ever for a Non-Indian Film in India

60.6 crore net on Thursday across 17,250 shows, and the ripple was immediate: The Odyssey lost most of its screens overnight and Dhamaal 4 slipped under a crore for the first time.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in India on Thursday, 30 July, to 60.6 crore net across 17,250 shows at 56.58 percent occupancy, the biggest opening day any non-Indian film has recorded in this market. Night shows ran at 65.11 percent, and the Hindi dub reported full houses across several morning slots before the English version caught up through the afternoon.

The advance had already signalled it. Two million tickets moved on BookMyShow in pre-sales, roughly four times what Deadpool & Wolverine managed and the strongest Hollywood pre-sell on the platform since August 2023. The one record that held was Avengers: Endgame’s 10.25 lakh national-chain tickets on opening day; Brand New Day closed its advance near 6 lakh.

The knock-on effect across the board was immediate. The Odyssey, which had been holding its IMAX and premium screens comfortably into a third week, dropped to 1.18 crore on its fourteenth day from just 953 shows as exhibitors reallocated capacity. Dhamaal 4 fell below a crore a day for the first time in its run. Jana Nayagan, already cooling through its second-week weekdays, now faces its second weekend against a fully-loaded Marvel release.

Globally the film crossed 100 million dollars before India even opened, with 35 million from China alone — the second-biggest opening there for a non-Chinese title since the pandemic. For the Indian market the more interesting number is the one still to come: whether a Hollywood release can hold through a second weekend against a Vijay film in Tamil Nadu, which is the sort of test this market rarely stages so directly.
